The Québec Delegate General in France, Michel Robitaille, was received on December 3 at the Elysee Palace to give the president, Nicolas Sarkozy, the Prime Minister's letter of Quebec seeking its formal accreditation with the French authorities. This meeting took place in a ceremony bringing 25 foreign ambassadors in France gathered to submit their letter of credit. Mr. Robitaille took office last October 4. Jean Charest and Nicolas Sarkozy want that cultural diversity is protected by the future free trade agreement Canada-Europe.

The Quebec premier was received Friday morning by the President of the Republic French at the Elysee Palace. They agreed, Mr. Charest said after the meeting, to include in the agreement currently being negotiated a clause recognizing the right of every State to protect its culture. He said the issue is "the most immediate."
"We want the agreement is very clear on the ability of states to support their cultural sector, said Prime Minister. We agreed to work together to ensure that there is a recognition of the sovereignty of both Canadian and Quebec in our areas of expertise on the culture. "

Under the agreement on Cultural Diversity adopted by UNESCO, culture is, in theory, free market forces. The Canada-Europe, in the eyes of Jean Charest, an opportunity to strengthen this principle.
